An update on our travels; Alyce met us in Cape Coral on the 13th. My brother Bob left to go back to Orlando on the 14th. Alyce and I spent a night anchored out in Bimini Basin. we then left for Sanibel and Captiva. On our way up San Carlos Sound we ran into a storm with lake effect winds. That's sudden blinding sheets of rain, with gale force winds. The boat was almost impossible to control. We tucked into the lee of an island and waited it out for the night. It was quite an experience. We then sailed up the Sound to Cabbage Key. Its a private island with an Inn and cottages that were built in the 1920's. Really quaint and tropical. Also a great restaurant. We spent two nights on their dock and had great food at the Inn.          On Sunday, the 18th we started our journey back to Ft. Myers, and Eastbound on the Okeechobee Waterway. On Tuesday we arrived at the marina at Clewiston, it was really pretty nice, they had an outdoor Tiki Bar featuring dollar draft beers at Happy Hour. Yesterday, the 20th, we set out across Lake Okeechobee and were instantly socked in with thick fog for the first ten miles across. I am glad I had Alyce as a lookout. I thought fog was a Northern thing. Today, the 21st, we are in Indian Town, a great little marina in the middle of the state. I am going to have my engine checked out.
Best to all
Bill & Alyce

My brother Bob & I arrived in Ft. Myers yesterday afternoon, 2/10 @ 1500 hrs. We had a great trip from Stuart, Fl. We stopped the 1st night at Indian Town Marina. Its a great spot about 8 miles from Lake Okeechobee. The next day we set out @ 0830 hrs. The first hurdle achieved when we squeezed under the 49' RR bridge. As they say a "Miss is as good as a mile"
We transited the locks, crossed the lake and anchored at Moore Haven. It was a good 50 mile day. We then went to        La Belle, a distance of about 30 miles. We stayed at the free dock. Its right in town with water and electricity. You can stay a maximum of 3 nights and must leave for 8 days. Our next day was spent going through 3 sets of locks and under 3 draw bridges and finally arriving at Ft. Myers. Today we are anchored out in Bimini Basin. A great protected anchorage close to everything. Tomorrow we are going to the Cape Coral City Marina to pick up Alyce.

So long for now

Hello Jim, My boat went back in the water last week. I had it hauled out while I was back in Mass. for Christmas. While it was on the hard I put in a new transducer so I could have depth on my Chartplotter. It works fine. I left Sebastian yesterday and arrived in Stuart this PM.. They have very reasonable moorings here with showers and all included. The plan is to check out the St. Lucie Canal. It sounds interesting. Hope all is well with you. Best regards Bill

This post script that I thought important, is a comment that Alyce made a few days before our trip ended. She said " I want to be like the fire extinguisher, only used in extreme emergencies." I have to say, in those cases she made all the difference. Thanks for reading my notes. Bill

2012-11-28  Last night we anchored in the Mosquito Lagoon near Edgewater. Tonight we are anchored in Cocoa and its blowing about 20-25Kts. Tomorrow we s/b in Melbourne, our ultimate destination. I will let you know when we arrive and hopefully the warm weather will be there as well.. Bill & Alyce

2012-11-22  Alyce & I are having Thanksgiving at the marina at Jekyll Island, GA. They are having a pot luck turkey dinner for all the cruisers. we will provide any side dishes. The weather is starting to get better. Today's temp is 65 and sunny. Tomorrow we head out and s/b in Fernandina, FL. at the end of the day. Yippee. Best to all &  Happy Thanksgiving Bill & Alyce

2012-11-20  We are anchored down at MM 673.0, in the Frederica River. Tomorrow we will go to the Jekyll Island Marina Resort. They are having a pot luck Thanksgiving Dinner.

2012-11-19 We stopped at Beaufort and left yesterday. Now we are at anchor at St. Augustine Creek. The weather yesterday was bad, very windy probably 30kts out of the N w/heavy rain. We are leaving here shortly.

2012-11-15  After giving the current velocity due to the exceptional tides and the weather forecast careful consideration, we decided to stay in Charleston until tomorrow. Thank you for the info. on Beaufort, we will use it when we get there.

2012-11-15  We have spent 2 days at Charleston, We arrived here on the 13th we have a niece that lives here who has shown us around the city. Its raining this morning as I am preparing to leave. Hopefully we will make it to Beaufort before dark.

2012-11-12   We left Southport on the tenth and traveled to Barefoot Landing Resort in SC. Then on to an anchor at the Thoroughfare Creek. Its a great place to anchor, plenty of protection and 11 to 20ft of water. Today we are going to make as much distance as possible. We are acquiring some great anchoring stories.

2012-11-06  We're anchored at camp Lejune for the night, not a nice day today with the wind and rain. Hopefully tomorrow will be a little better Bill

2012-11-05  We're at Spooner Creek. Dropped  anchor at 1545 hrs. and are using our new gas fired cabin heater. Tomorrow we push on to Camp Lejune area.

2012-11-04  Bill and Alyce anchored near Oriental NC last night since they could not make Oriental before dark.  It has been cold in the thirties at night and the boat does not have an independent heat source (yet).  Alyce has been ill, so they made it to Oriental early this morning to spend some time dockside to warm the boat and get supplies.  If they leave tomorrow they should be at least to Beaufort NC or further south.

2012-11-02  Finally an Internet connection, so here is the latest move. On Thursday, 11/1, we left our safe harbor at Lamb's Marina, traveled down the Pasquotank River and crossed Albemarle Sound. Albemarle is similar to Nantucket Sound in that it is not very deep,13' to18' in depth and wide open exposure to wind from all directions. Thursday it was from the West at 10 to 15 with gusts to 25kts. This made for steep 6'to 8' waves close together, similar to here. We anchored down in East Lake, about 2+ miles off the ICW. Yesterday, the 2nd we traveled down the Alligator River and the Alligator River/ Pungo Canal to Bell Haven, NC and a marina in Dowry Creek, off the Pungo River. This was a good day as we put on over 52 miles. Today we set out for Oriental, NC. Regards and thanks to all who were concerned for our safety during the hurricane. Bill

2012-10-29
I spoke to Bill Greer this morning.
He and Alyce are fine.
They moved Corsair on 10-27 to a better protected area.
He is in Lamb's Landing Marina which is part of the Dismal Swamp route on the Pasquotank river portion. The hurricane wind has blown the water out of the river portion of the Pasquotank sound and Bill said all the boats are sitting in the mud.

I guess he will not sink at least.

Bill does not have Internet access at this point.
 Jim R

2012-10-26  Corsair has found a bulkhead to tie to in the Dismal Swamp Canal at mile marker 15.  May wait out the storm there.

2012-10-25  We have left the Bay Creek Marina and are heading for the ICW, either the Albermarle Chesapeake or the Dismal Swamp. I think that either of them will give protection in case we encounter the storm that is in the forecast Bill

2012-10-19 0700 hrs. left the Tilghman Island Marina, through the Knapp's Narrows channel bound for Cambridge,MD Arrived at Cambridge Yacht Club at 1300 hrs, got a slip for the night. The next day was the Schooner Show at Cambridge. The Pride of Baltimore was there as well as the Schooner Tyrone from Chatham, Ma. We met and hailed him in New York on the East River. We were surprised to see each other in Cambridge. Tomorrow we leave to continue our Southbound journey.

2012-10-17 0800 hrs, weighed anchor and back out to the Chesapeake, Southbound and under the Bay Bridge with a fair tide current that sent us along at 6.5Kts. Live is good. We arrived at Tilghman Island at 1600hrs. to meet some friends from Virginia that came to greet us. Had dinner in St. Michaels. The next day we toured the Watermans Museum. This museum depicted live on the Chesapeake, oystering, crabbing and boat building, particularly the Skipjack sailboats. We stayed two days.

2012-10-16 1300 hrs,Made our way down the Chesapeake to Rock Hall or Swan River. it was a little tricky getting in there but once in it turned out to be a large enough serene cove surrounded by duck blinds. I could only imagine what that serenity turned into during duck hunting season.

2012-10-16 Hello Jim,  Everything is OK. We lost internet connection until now. We are in Rock Hall, MD. I will prepare the details in between and send them.  Thanks for you concern.

2012-10-15 0800 hrs Weighed anchor for Worten Creek. About an hour later the engine quit. Checked everything over and to no avail the engine would not start. Called Sea Tow and got towed to Worten Creek Marina. The next day their mechanic fixed the problem. A spring on the governor linkage had to be replaced. A minor detail but a major inconvenience. The people at the marina were great. They fixed the problem right away and we got under way. I highly recommend them for a stop over. Also they were voted best Mom & Pop Marina on the Chesapeake.

2012-10-14 0700 hrs weighed anchor and completed our voyage up Delaware Bay, through the C&D to the upper Chesapeake and anchored down behind the promontory at Turkey Point. It was a beautiful place with big rocks and Pine Trees. it resembled Maine in many respects.

2012-10-13 0100 hrs, left Cape May Marina and travelled the canal to Delaware Bay, got asa far as Ship John Shoal and anchored down in the Cohansey River. It was nothing more than Delaware Bay surounded by 3ft tall marsh grass. It blew a gale that night and little sleep was gotten.

2012-10-12  Thanks for the updates on the weather. We arrived in Cape May yesterday PM and got a slip at the marina. Our plan was to leave this AM to catch the 1:47 flood up Delaware Bay. The WX forecast for the NW winds with gusts to 25 put the kibosh on that. So we will go tomorrow, leave the basin at 12:30,go through the canal, then up the bay to Ship John Shoal and anchor for the night. Then continue on Sunday, weather permitting. We are staying at Utsch's Marina. $2.00 a foot and it comes with a free bag of goodies and a bottle of wine. We plan to go into Cape May and check out the town today. Best regards Bill & Alyce

2012-10-08 We spent Sunday Night in Manisquan, NJ. The plan was to start out @ 0600 for Atlantic City, instead we were stuck in the mud at our slip and had to wait till 0900 to get underway. We had a great sail and arrived at ACY,Golden Nugget Marina @ 1900 in the dark. I am glad my son Bill was with us to spot the bouys. He left today and Alyce and I are going to wait out the rain here intil tomorrow when we head for Cape May. Everything seems to be working OK and thanks for the WX updates.

2012-10-07  An update on us; We left City Island.NY and went to Flushing to the Worlds Fair Marina and met my son Bill. Sunday we left there @ 3 pm and traversed The East River's 'Hells Gate @ 10 kts, the East River, Lower Manhattan, The new Towers Memorial, Verrazano Narrows and anchored in the anchorage North of Round Shoal in the Lower Basin. On our journey to these destinations on Sunday, we proudly displayed our Boston Red Sox banner throughout the waterways of NYC. Today we went to Manisquan for the night. Tomorrow, Atlantic City if the NW wind cooperates. Bill

2012-10-03 I think the plan is to get as many miles in by Thursday night. My son Bill is going to meet us at the Worlds Fair Marina, Flushing, Sat. Am. Saturday afternoon we are going to shoot the 3.01 pm current at Hells Gate. Bill

2012-10-02 We are heading back to CT tomorrow  to continue, any take on the WX  for Thurs ? Bill

2012-09-27 thru 10-1  For those following this log.  Bill's mother-in-law died while he was in New Haven and he is tending to necessary family business for a while.   He plans to resume his travels in the future.  Jim R

2012-09-27 We have been in New Haven at a yacht club since Tuesday waiting out some 20-25 knt West winds. Today its NW & NE and this is the day to get going but we need to go home.   So I think I will leave the boat here at a mooring and go with Alyce & come back next week & continue. Thanks for the update on the winds. Bill

2012-09-24 Tonight we are in beautiful New Haven, CT. We left Niantic this AM and fought the current for about 3hrs before the change. There was a NW breeze that helped out some until the tide change and then it was on the nose for the rest of the afternoon. Any way, its all good and sailing in an area that new and different is good for the senses,  that is if there is any sense. Bill

2012-09-23 Left Pt Judith @ 10AM Ar Niantic,CT @1630 today. Everything seems to be working OK. Been sailing with the jib & engine. and can maintain 5-6 knts. Its all good. Bill

2012-09-22 Fog kept us in Cuttyhunk until 11.30 yesterday,Sat. AR in Pt. Judith @ 1700

2012-09-21 Made Cuttyhunk
