FOLLOW THE FLAG (FTF) Here are the Rules
You provide the destination and hospitality and the cruise committee will provide the marketing!
It’s an opportunity to meet other HYC members and get together with your fellow cruisers and day sailors! It’s also a chance to go someplace you may have never been, with the security of knowing you’re not alone. It is a simple way for both SAIL and POWER cruisers to meet at local destinations and experience an infamous BYOE (bring your own everything) HYC “Docktail Party!”
FTF are typically weekend events (Nantucket before the rates go up), but might be day trips (picnic @ Sampson’s Island) or a multi-day rally. Some will be planned ahead, some will be spontaneous, which accommodates the uncertainties of weather and family calendars. No advance commitment will be necessary to participate. All HYC members are welcomed to join in, no matter what kind or size boat. Any member can organize a FTF event.
The destination for each FOLLOW THE FLAG will be decided by the self-appointed host boat before the event, based on anticipated wind and weather forecasts. Notification of the FTF destination and host boat will be posted on the HYC Cruise website(usually the preceding Thursday) and/or will be posted at the clubhouse bulletin board. If you miss those, just keep your eye out for the RED HYC Cruise flag when you arrive in any harbor.
Cancellation of the FTF due to poor weather conditions is at the discretion of the host boat. A notice of cancellation will be posted at the clubhouse and e-mailed if you have signed up for FTF events.
At the destination, the host boat will lead a radio net on station 68 LOW POWER at 1700 hrs confirming the location and logistics for the get-together and will remain on the radio to listen for new arrivals. The host boat will fly the HYC Cruise Flag so they can be identified at the destination. All HYC member/boats are welcome.
